Well I finished the baby shower cake that I mentioned in my last post. It was a lot of fun (and work) but I think it turned out pretty cute. And I think it’s my favorite. At least until I make the next cake. I decided to make a diaper bag, with a few baby accessories. Here it is:
And yes, it’s all edible. I made the booties, keys, bottle and pacifier 4 or 5 days in advance so they could set up and dry. Then I spent Thursday decorating the diaper bag. Here’s a view from the other side:
Close-up of the diapers in the pocket:
And the bottle (It was white chocolate…should be pretty tasty):
I was going to put a pocket on the back of the bag too, but I was too tired after all that:
It takes forever to get a cake like this ready to decorate. It took me longer to bake, stack, torte, fill, carve, dowel, support, and crumbcoat the cake and prepare the board than it did to actually decorate the cake. Here’s what it looked like somewhere in the middle of that process:
Yeah, it is a MESSY job!
You can’t see it, but there is a board and 6 dowels inside that cake, going all the way through the cake board. I was scared to death it would fall over, so I put PLENTY of support. (Remember the incident with the Dr. Pepper cake? Yeah, I didn’t want that to happen again. lol) When I dropped it off, I told Tarabeth and Holly, “Good luck cutting this one.” haha
Yep, I liked it. I like when I get to try something different. There were actually 2 different cakes I wanted to try, and I chose this one. Hopefully, I’ll have the opportunity to try the other one sometime in the future.
Roxie, my little helper…..she asks me the whole time I’m doing the cake, “Mommy, can I have some cake?”…..Uh, no.
And finally, here’s a picture of some candy I’ve been enjoying the past few days. YUM!!!

@SecondGradeT - Yes, me too! I was giddy about this one. lol I’m so goofy. It’s the little things that make me happy.
Your cake turned out cute. I wouldn’t know how to cut that thing either. So who got you See’s? Did Shannon go to CA again?
Oh, by the way, I’m home. lol
OOOO….I love it! What is the other one you want to try? I always liked the one of the bassinet. You need to do it sometime.
You just cease to amaze me! It is beautiful. Don’t you wish you could have preserved them and started your own gallery? So hard to think someone ate it after all that work. Thanks for sharing!
I love that cake! You are amazing. I can’t believe how real it looks!
Cute stuff! :oD the bottle looks so real! That See’s Candy is making my mouth water lol
@SherrBearOKC - Thanks! I appreciate the compliment. I must admit, I loved this one too! FUN!
@ItIsAWonderfulLife - Thanks! And yes, I am LOVING the candy too. When I go to CA next month, I do believe I’ll have to make a brief stop for some more See’s. lol
@malawisister - Thanks! Yes, I know…I can’t imagine cutting that thing. Luckily, I wasn’t there to witness the massacre.
Oh my…i love this cake. Just amazing! I thought about you all day today. I watched 3 episodes of the show on the WE network called “Amazing Wedding Cakes”…have you seen that show! You could so be on the show! ~thanks for sharing
@OneofManyMrsSmiths - Thanks! I have heard of that show but never watched it. I need to see it sometime. I’m sure I’d love it.
@coffeenewmanfan - Oh, the bassinet is another one I considered this time too. I was thinking of three, then narrowed it down to the diaper bag or a box of diapers. I’ll have to try the bassinet or diapers next time. So many cakes, so little time. haha
That is such a creative idea! you pulled it off beautifully!
I love the cake, they are always to pretty to cut. I don’t know where you come up with the ideas, but they are cute. Jacob can’t wait for the next one, he loves to see what is next.
